Today you take up the watchman's post at the wall of your own inner life. You are not going to fight anything yet. You are not going to fix anything yet. You are only going to watch what crosses the wall.
Jesus paired watching with praying. He understood that the inner life only becomes workable when it is observed. Left unwatched, it drifts. Watched, it can be brought to Him.
The accuser will try, this very first day, to convince you that what you are doing is too small to matter. Three breaths. A short prayer. A few sentences in a notebook. It will not feel impressive. Trust the smallness. Watchmen do not build walls. They notice what comes over them. That is the work.
